Professor Adeleke Adegboyega Abiodun is a Professor of Human Anatomy and Cell Biology in the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Nigeria. He is also a Consultant Orthopaedic and Spine Surgeon at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife. He obtained his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University) in 1989 and subsequently earned a Master’s degree in Human Anatomy from the University of Lagos. He completed postgraduate training in Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology and became a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at OAUTHC.
Professor Abiodun undertook advanced subspecialty training in Arthroplasty and Spine Surgery at Assiut University, Egypt (2009–2010), and later trained at the Institute of Endoscopic Spine Surgery, Bordeaux, France (2013). He also holds fellowships in Endoscopic Spine Surgery (France) and Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (Germany). He is a Fellow of the Medical College of Surgeons (Orthopaedics) and a SICOT Fellow in Spine Surgery. His academic and research contributions include supervising numerous postgraduate students and consultants in Human Anatomy, publishing multiple theses, and publishing several peer-reviewed journal articles. He received a research grant from OAUTHC in 2006 and won first prize at the Osteoporosis Competition organized by the Egyptian Orthopaedic Society in Cairo in 2009. Earlier academic distinctions include Best Graduating Student awards in Biochemistry and Pharmacology (1989).
Within OAUTHC, he has played key leadership roles, including serving as Consultant-in-Charge of the Orthopaedics and Traumatology Department at the Wesley Guild Hospital Unit (2008–2017), where he pioneered the establishment of the Spine Surgery Unit. He also founded the Back Pain Study Group, comprising members from multiple institutions across Nigeria. Additionally, he contributed significantly to the repositioning and routine operation of the department’s embalming services and led the development and implementation of a practical histology manual for medical, dental, and medical rehabilitation students.
Professor Abiodun has organized and facilitated national workshops on spine surgery and deformity correction at OAUTHC, Ile-Ife, and the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos. He has served as a resource person for national and international training programs in anatomy, orthopaedics, and spine surgery and has participated as an international volunteer surgeon for spinal deformity correction in Ghana (2012). He has also appeared as a guest speaker on Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State television programs to educate the public on back pain, knee pain, and health promotion.
