Dr. Surajudeen Kayode Ojo, MBChB, is a clinician-scientist and an anatomist in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, College of Health Sciences, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Nigeria, where he has served as a Lecturer since 2011. He obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree from Obafemi Awolowo University and has since built a career that combines dedicated teaching with focused experimental biomedical research.
Dr. Ojo’s academic work is grounded in morphological sciences, with strong expertise in histology, histomorphology, and immunohistochemistry. His research is particularly oriented toward understanding tissue injury, adaptation, and repair in experimental models of disease, with emphasis on clinically relevant conditions such as metabolic disorders, drug and toxin-induced organ damage, and reproductive and cardiovascular pathology. A central theme of his current research is placental histomorphology and immunohistochemistry, aimed at improving mechanistic understanding of the placental basis of pre-eclampsia, a major contributor to maternal morbidity and mortality in low-and middle-income countries.
In addition to his research, Dr. Ojo is deeply committed to undergraduate medical education. He teaches across the preclinical curriculum, including human embryology, human histology, neuroanatomy, and systemic gross anatomy of the limbs, thorax, abdomen, head and neck, and special senses, as well as renal, endocrine, and reproductive anatomy. His teaching philosophy emphasizes clarity, structural understanding, and the integration of anatomical knowledge with clinical thinking.
Dr. Ojo has also contributed to academic leadership and service within the University. He has served as Assistant Coordinator of the Part III Preclinical Anatomy Programme since 2012 and previously served as Assistant Coordinator of the Part I Medical and Dental Programme in the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences. He was a member of the Local Organising Committee for the 9th Annual Conference of the Anatomical Society of Nigeria held in Ile-Ife. He is a member of the Nigerian Medical Association, the Anatomical Society of Nigeria, and the Anatomical Society of West Africa.
Dr. Ojo has published in reputable peer-reviewed journals, with contributions spanning renal, hepatic, neural, cardiac, and prostatic experimental pathology. ORCID: 0009-0001-2735-0145
